How to Care for Your Tefillin

Terms of Warranty

1. Receiving Your New Tefillin

                a. When removing the Tefillin from their boxes, make sure your hands are dry.  Open the Tefillin boxes carefully, so that the hinges will not break.  Opening the boxes to an angle of more than 90° will break the hinges.

                b. Carefully remove the Tefillin from the boxes in the following manner:  Turn over each box, open the cover (the wide base) upwards, and pull the Tefillin out.  In this way, you will not dent the corners of the Tefillin, nor will the Tefillin easily slip from your hands.

                c. You may see grayish stains on the Tefillin.  These are formed naturally as a result of the painting procedure.  They may be removed by dipping a piece of cotton in a bit of olive oil and rubbing it lightly over the Tefillin batim.  Don’t rub it on the bottom of the Tefillin, nor on the straps.  Afterwards, with dry cotton, go over the shin letters on the head-Tefillin.

                d. Try on the head-Tefillin and make sure that the knot is fit to your head size.

                e. Keep your Tefillin order form (Form #102) as confirmation of your acquisition of the Tefillin, and as your warranty in accordance with paragraph 3a below.

2. Daily Care of Your Tefillin

Your Tefillin are made of leather, and are sensitive to wetness, moisture, dents and bangs, heat, and extreme changes in temperature.

                a. Wetness:  Do not don the Tefillin while your hair is wet, whether from a shower, sweat, gel, or the like.  If the Tefillin was placed on wet hair, it must be wiped dry before being replaced in its box.  If you sweat profusely, we recommend that you dry the Tefillin and allow it to air out at home.  Exposure to wetness and moisture causes the ma’abarta to take on a distorted shape, leads to cracks, and causes the prudot to open.

                b. Moisture: You must not leave the Tefillin in a moist place, in order that they not become moldy or musty.  In moist climates, the Tefillin should be aired out frequently.

                c. Dents and bangs:  While wearing and moving the Tefillin, you must be careful not to allow them to be banged.  Dents can damage the Tefillin, and may sometimes even render them unkosher (ritually unfit).

                d. Heat:  The Tefillin should not be exposed for extended periods to a source of heat or fire, nor should they be left in the sun.  Tefillin should not be left in a car, even inside a container - as the container often absorbs heat from the sun.

                e. Extreme changes of temperature:  While travelling by plane, take the Tefillin in the cabin with you, and do not “check” them with your other luggage.  The plane’s cargo hold undergoes extreme changes of temperature, which can damage the Tefillin.

3. The factory assumes responsibility for the Tefillin as follows:

                a. If you discover a flaw in your Tefillin, please send it back to us, together with Form 102 -  the confirmation of your order and receipt of the Tefillin.

                b. The Tefillin must be identifiable as having originated in our factory.  (This condition is necessitated because of cases where people bought several pairs of Tefillin from our factory, but after finding a fault in a different pair - one that was not bought from us - they sent the Tefillin back – accompanied by a purchase form from us!)

The factory is responsible for:

   ·   Missing and Extra letters - for life;

   ·   Fading of the ink within 20 years;

   ·   Cracks, and fading of the color of the batim, for two years.

4. The factory does not assume responsibility for the Tefillin in the following cases:

                a. When proper daily care was not provided for the Tefillin, as outlined in paragraph 2 above - exposure to wetness, moisture, dents and bangs, heat, or extreme changes in temperature.

                b. Natural wearing down of the Tefillin:

                                         ·   erosion of the batim, and especially in the corners;

                                         ·   fading of color and cracks in the Tefillin batim after more than two years;

                                         ·   erosion, cracks, and fading of color - in the straps;

                                         ·   fading of the ink in the written passages after more than 20 years;

                                         ·   breakage or wearing-down of the plastic boxes.

                c. Opening of the Tefillin by someone other than Tefillin Beit El-authorized personnel.

Note:

In case of doubt as to the extent of the factory’s responsibility for a given complaint, factory experts will determine whether the factory is responsible or not.
